The Respi Care team looks after central aspects of ventilation such as measurements, clinical assessments and the adjustment of the devices to improve the respiratory parameters. The team is made up of respiratory therapists as well as specially trained experts in the Pneumology and Cardiology department. With ongoing interprofessional consultations, they endeavour to find a balance between supporting spontaneous breathing and avoiding breathlessness.
The Respi Care team supports the nursing teams on wards looking after ventilated patients. If a patient is (partially) ventilated and living outside of a hospital or clinic, this is referred to as at-home ventilation. To ensure that moving to at-home ventilation is safe and goes smoothly, the Respi Care team provides comprehensive training for people living with spinal cord injury and carers.
Another key duty for the Respi Care team is to be involved in outpatient and inpatient cardiology and pneumology consultations.
This issue of Paraplegia magazine (in german) provides a greater insight into the work of the Respi Care team.
