Driving in a wheelchair

Driving while sitting in a wheelchair

Wheelchair users who are transported by vehicle or who drive themselves must be secured appropriately. Getting into a minibus or a wheelchair transporter is possible with an access ramp or a lifting platform. The wheelchair is fixed to the floor of the vehicle. The wheelchair user is secured using a special back rest with an integrated or original seatbelt.

  • Orthotec Ford Custom Independence

Ford Tourneo Custom with a lowered floor plan all the way to behind the driver and passenger seats

The floor pan has been lowered in the rear of this vehicle. This provides an interior height of up to 145 cm, which means that people sitting in a wheelchair also have enough head room. This uniquely long floor pan enables the wheelchair user to move up to behind the front seats This is a considerably better position than the usual one in the rear of the vehicle. In addition to the discernibly improved driving comfort, it is also easier to have conversations with the other people in the car. The wheelchair is correctly restrained and secured with two electric belts at the front and two retractors at the back. In order to ensure that the wheelchair user is ideally restrained, a permanently installed three-point safety belt system offers the highest possible level of safety. This system is completed with a swivel-mounted headrest and backrest, which additionally increase the safety of the wheelchair user.

To make it easier for the wheelchair to access the car, the vehicle is equipped with an electric winch. The vehicle can optionally be equipped with rotating fold-up seats in the third row in the passenger compartment.

Using a non-slip access ramp that can be conveniently unfolded and folded up makes it is easy to push/drive the wheelchair into the passenger compartment. There, the wheelchair is correctly restrained and secured with two electric belts at the front and two retractors at the back. In addition to the basic safety features, the professional FutureSafe restraint system with a headrest and backrest is also available Both rests can be swivelled and locked independently of each other, which means they can be ideally adjusted to the back and head.
