Research Focus
The research field of Swiss Paraplegic Research (SPF) follows a transdisciplinary and inclusive approach.
The fundamental basis for SPF’s research activities is the Swiss Spinal Cord Injury Cohort Study (SwiSCI). SwiSCI serves as a research platform for SPF’s research groups as well as for national and international groups of stakeholders with questions related to clinical and community-oriented research. Within this core project, SPF has been collaborating closely with the four paraplegic centers in Switzerland, Swiss Paraplegic Association (SPV), persons with spinal cord injury from all over Switzerland, research teams at Swiss universities, Swiss centers for neurorehabilitation and a series of European and international research groups since 2010.
Research focus
Employment and Social Integration
The integration of persons with disabilities is a central issue – both from the point of view of the affected persons and from the sociopolitical perspective.
Health Services Research
Health services research deals with the use and quality of healthcare services.
Shoulder Health and Mobility
Due to their upper extremity dependency in daily life, the mechanical loading on the shoulder in individuals with spinal cord injury is frequent and high.
Biology of Aging
Spinal cord injury affects many organs and systems. In interplay with age, environment and personal factors it may result in various health conditions.
Health Communication
Communication is central to healthcare. Through communication health information is shared between health professionals and patients and between health professionals themselves.
Disability Policy
Disability Policy conducts research on the content of health and health-related policy designed to optimize social participation for persons experiencing disability in all areas of life, learning from the experience of spinal cord injury.
Learning Health Systems
How do health systems improve? How do they keep pace with research innovation? How can they ensure that health care is meeting the highest possible standards?
Functioning and Methods
The research group Functioning and Methods focuses on the development and implementation of methods for the standardized documentation of information on the functioning of persons with spinal cord injury and other health conditions.
